We the People

This song is set during a time in American history when one had to be able to “read” a paragraph from the Constitution in order to vote. It also addresses the fact that some African-Americans were made to sit in the balconies of many theaters. The best seats in the house!

CHORUS: We the People, We the People
In Order to form a more perfect Union
Establish Justice
Insure domestic Tranquility

SOLO: Going to the theater was always such a thrill
I was treated royally, like a queen of a girl
Had a private entrance from the courtyard on the side
My own set of stairs leading up to my throne
My subjects below me
And me up here high, wondering why

We the People doesn’t mean Me the People
That’s just not right, That can never be right
And if We the People doesn’t mean Me the People
The ghost of that little girl still sits there

CHORUS: We the People doesn’t mean Me the People
That’s just not right, That can never be right
And if We the People doesn’t mean Me the People
We’ll never secure the blessings of Liberty
To ourselves let alone to Posterity

We the People, We the People
United we stand, Divided we fall
We the People, We the People
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America
My America
We the People
