Just Home in the Mountains

This song, co-written with my son Brett McCluskey, was inspired by the Drum Circle of Asheville and a scene that Jules Corriere wrote for the play. I’ve given you a bit of the scene as the words are such beautiful prosody, and it may help you understand how the song fits into the play.

I made a home here in Asheville
Even in the worst of times the music still plays
It still says I am, I am, I am
We don’t always hear it when the rain is pouring
And the tears are falling
We forget we are
I forget I am
I forget I have been
I forget I will be
I forget this moment is just a moment in many
One heartbeat in time
One moment I am
Now, I am in this moment
And now, I am in this one
I am, I am

Asheville drum circle

The Asheville Drum Circle is held downtown every Friday night during the warmer months, weather permitting.

I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
Just home in the mountains
Just home in these mountains that first drew me here
The energy’s flowin’
The energy’s flowin’ right through me
It charges the whole atmosphere
Just home in the mountains
Just here in this place I was destined to be
A spirit is pullin’
A spirit is pullin’ with pure magnetism
It wants me to see
That I belong
For the first time belong
To something greater than the sum of its whole
Finer than anything I have known
And it brought me here through shadow and light
Brought me here so that I might find a home
A home in the mountains
I am
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
I am

Just home in the mountains
Just home in these mountains that first drew me here
The energy’s flowin’
The energy’s flowin’ right through me
It charges the whole atmosphere
And in this home
This beautiful home
I’ll find a purpose for my time here on earth
There’s space to breathe
There’s time for rebirth
Now it’s brought me here through shadow and light
Brought me here so that I might find a home
A home in the mountains

It brought me here through shadow and light
Brought me here so that I might find a home
A home in the mountains
I am
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
We are
