A Place in Your Memory

This song, co-written with my son Brett McCluskey, is sung in the play by “Susie”, a middle-aged woman who finally comes to terms with her father’s Alzheimer’s disease.

SUSIE: You can go anywhere you wanna
Grandma’s house or way down to Savannah
Your own fishing spot with Jimmy
Or passing the time with old Sammy Ling

You can be anywhere you wanna be
Right here now or back safe with your family
Just keep a place, keep a place for me in your memory
Keep a place, a quiet place in your memory

And I’ll keep a place, a tender place
Where it will always be, here deep inside of me

ALL: All of us have one thing in common
We fear our lives will be forgotten
Will our time here have no meaning to anyone
Or in the grand scheme of things

How sad it would be if that thought were true
Let’s just make a pact between me and you
Keep a place
Keep a place for me in your memory

And I’ll keep a place, a special place
Where it will always be, here deep inside of me

Help me remember those moments so tender
Near the banks of the Salkehatchie River
