CONSTRUCTION WORKER (Carrying a shovel over his shoulder while walking, he suddenly stops and looks down): There's a bump in the road! (He takes the shovel down off of his shoulder and tries to fill the hole in. Others in the scene gather round to see what he is doing, commenting on the hole and how it got there. The sound of the worker trying to fill the hole in continues as they speak)
PERSON 1: There's a bump in the road 'cause they paved the mule over!
PERSON 2: There's a bump in the road 'cause they paved the mule over where it lay on the ground when they shot it down!
PERSON 3: They had to shoot it 'cause it's leg got hurt pullin' wagon after wagon of red clay dirt!
PERSON 4: It was pullin' that wagon for to build the road but that wagon was filled with a heavy load!
PERSON 5: And that mule it lies a mouldrin' 'neath a ton or more of earth that keeps sinkin' ever lower. Poor ol' mule! It had no worth...(The sounds of the construction worker cease as he realizes his task is futile)

CONSTRUCTION WORKER: Looky there! There's still a bump in the road!

PERSON 6: Hmmph! Well, some things just cain't be fixed!

(Now the music and singing begin. These are the voices of the past)
CHORUS: The problems 'round here started long ago
Way before that mule caused A BUMP IN THE ROAD

SOLO: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
Can never be trusted to do what it's told
You can pave in on over, go around or turn back
But sooner or later you must face the fact
That itty-bitty problem you thought would go away
Will start to rise up and just get bigger each day

CHORUS: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD

SOLO: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
Can cause a lot of problems with a heavy load
You can try to avoid it, or look the other way
But you'll still pay the piper at the end of the day

CHORUS: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD

SOLO: These fields were cleared, these roads were built with our own hands
CHORUS: Our flesh, our blood
SOLO: We fought those bumps, we faced our fears, made a strong stand
CHORUS: Our sweat, our tears
SOLO: The weather was all in God's hands
CHORUS: But the future was in our own
SOLO: And that bump in the road won't just disappear
CHORUS: You gotta dig it out, fill it in, let it heal
SOLO: Just don't leave it alone

CHORUS: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD

GRANDMA: I worked that mill, I made my home with these two hands
CHORUS: Her flesh, her blood
GRANDMA: Planted that tree, that bush on my own land
CHORUS: Her sweat, her tears
GRANDMA: Well, My life was all in God's hands, but the future was not my own
And that bump in the road soon disappeared
They had come, they had won, where's my say?
I ain't no bump in the road

CHORUS: A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD
A BUMP IN THE ROAD, A BUMP IN THE ROAD

A BUMP IN THE ROAD...
